“Eco-friendly” and “sustainable” have both become common terms for climate change, with an increasing number of brands mentioning them in their campaigns. But still some of them haven’t really changed their practices or supply chains to reflect the ecological philosophy of their products. Environmentalists are using innovative models to solve serious climate problems especially in packaging.
1. Environmental printing ink
Often, we only consider the waste generated by packaging and how to reduce it, leaving out other products, such as the ink used to create brand designs and messages. Many of the inks used are harmful to the environment, leading to acidification, this year we will see an increase in vegetable and soy-based inks, both of which are biodegradable and less likely to release toxic chemicals.
2. Bioplastics
Bioplastics designed to replace plastics made from fossil fuels might not be biodegradable, but they do help reduce the carbon footprint to some extent, so while they won’t solve the problem of climate change, they will help mitigate its effects.
3. The antimicrobial packaging
When developing alternative food and perishable food packaging, a key concern of many of the scientists is to prevent pollution. In response to this problem, antibacterial packaging emerged as the new development of the packaging sustainability movement. In essence, it can kill or inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms, help extend shelf life and prevent contamination.
4. Degradable and biodegradable packaging
A number of brands have begun to invest time, money and resources to create packaging that can be naturally decomposed into the environment without any adverse impact on wildlife. So compostable and biodegradable packaging has become a niche market.
In essence, it allows packaging to confer a second purpose in addition to its core use. Compostable and biodegradable packaging has been on the minds of many people for perishable items, but a growing number of clothing and retail brands have adopted compostable packaging to reduce their carbon footprint – an obvious trend to watch this year.
5. Flexible packaging
Flexible packaging came to the fore as brands began to move away from traditional packaging materials such as glass and plastic products. The core of flexible packaging is that it does not require hard materials, which makes it smaller and cheaper to produce, while also making it easier to transport items and helping to reduce emissions in the process.
6. Convert to a single material
People would be surprised to find hidden materials in many packaging, such as laminate and composite packaging, making it unrecyclable. The integrated use of more than one material means it is difficult to separate it into different components for recycling, which means they end up in landfills. Designing single-material packaging solves this problem by ensuring that it is fully recyclable.
7. Reduce and replace microplastics
Some packaging is deceptive. At first glance it is environmentally friendly, completely do not see is plastic products, we will be glad of our environmental awareness. But it’s here that the trick is in: microplastics. Despite their name, microplastics pose a serious threat to water systems and the food chain.
The current focus is on developing natural alternatives to biodegradable microplastics to reduce our dependence on them and protect waterways from widespread damage to animals and water quality.
8. Research the paper market
Innovative alternatives to paper and cards, such as bamboo paper, stone paper, organic cotton, pressed hay, cornstarch, etc. Development in this area is ongoing and will expand further in 2022.
That is to reduce the volume of packaging, only to meet the necessary; Can be reused without sacrificing quality; Or it could be fully recyclable.
